I am privileged to bring you the UPMC Community Benefits Report for Fiscal Year 2009.

Within the past 12 months, UPMC provided more than $500 million in programs and services that benefited the communities we serve. While our activities are broad in scope, they are all tightly focused on transforming Pittsburgh and the surrounding region socially, intellectually, and economically.

Expanding the Local Economy
As the Pittsburgh economy evolves, UPMC continues to be a leading engine of innovation. Working with industry partners and the region’s educational institutions, particularly the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University, we are fostering a new export economy based on intellectual capital. We also have reinvented the way Pittsburgh generates wealth, by bridging the divides between clinical care, biomedical and academic research, and information technology. These initiatives place Pittsburgh at the forefront of health care and life sciences research — two of the largest and most important industries in the world. More importantly, they put our region at the focal point of business development by creating jobs that support responsible economic growth.

This “eds and meds” approach has generated significant benefits that have helped shield Pittsburgh from the full impact of the recession. UPMC provides almost 50,000 jobs, and is the largest employer in the Pittsburgh region. The organization creates a total $18.8 billion impact on the economy, accounting for nearly 10 percent of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area’s GDP.

Reaching Beyond Local Boundaries
In September of 2009, UPMC and its vision for our region’s future were showcased at the G20 meeting held in Pittsburgh. Leaders from the world’s 19 largest economies arrived to see how UPMC helped transform Pittsburgh from a Rust Belt city into a center for high-tech exports. They also learned how UPMC and Pittsburgh are poised to develop strong, mutually beneficial relationships with their countries.

UPMC is fostering regional entrepreneurship and job growth, fueled by innovation, partnership, and achievement. It is a city where ideas are translated into needed services and commerce that change the world — now and in the future. It is a thriving community that’s continually striving for — and achieving — excellence.
