Letter From the Chairman
G. Nicholas Beckwith III
Chairman, UPMC

On behalf of the Board of Directors of UPMC, it is my pleasure to introduce the Fiscal Year 2009 Community Benefits Report.

UPMC continues to strengthen the communities and economy of western Pennsylvania in important ways. While many of our initiatives are quite visible, others move along quietly and often unnoticed. All of our efforts, however, help to strengthen the economy of the Pittsburgh area by enhancing the delivery of health care services, spurring key research initiatives and the translation of research findings into clinical innovations, and providing jobs for almost 50,000 individuals. This report documents UPMC’s ongoing dedication to serving the people of western Pennsylvania.

Holding Steady in the Face of Economic Upheaval
The severe economic instability over the past year has created significant financial challenges for UPMC, and for many of the individuals we work with or serve. Despite the impact of global market turbulence and domestic economic challenges, we continued to honor our commitments and reach out in meaningful ways to our communities.

Within the past year, we subsidized more than $195 million in care for the uninsured and those who had no means to pay. We delivered or supported more than 3,000 health improvement programs throughout our service area. And we delivered more than $247 million for health research and education.

Strengthening the Communities We Call Home
In 2009, we reinforced our presence by continuing to invest in the Pittsburgh region. Within the city, we opened our new, $622 million Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC, which is providing children, adolescents, and their families with access to state-of-the-art care while reinvigorating Pittsburgh’s Lawrenceville neighborhood.

In Pittsburgh’s rapidly growing North Hills, a new seven-story addition to UPMC Passavant is offering local residents direct access to advanced cancer treatment, cardiovascular and neurological treatments, and emergency care. In addition, we have broken ground on Cumberland Woods, our seventh freestanding independent living center, that will create a new, vibrant community for seniors. And in the Monongahela Valley, we are maintaining and streamlining access to quality care through our established network of community resources and patient outreach programs.

At UPMC, our commitment to serving western Pennsylvania forms the foundation of everything we do. I am honored to share our accomplishments with you.
